Montgomery, Ala. – To provide all-inclusive support for the Alabama Course of Study:
Mathematics Grades 6-8, the Alabama Department of Education now offers free access to Math Nation powered by Accelerate Learning.
The online and print learning resources for grades 6-8 are available at no cost to Alabama public schools thanks to funding from the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). This is the Alabama Department of Education’s initiative to improve math and science teaching statewide.
Through AMSTI’s innovative partnership with Math Nation, Alabama students, teachers, and families can access Math Nation’s resources for 6-8th Grade Math from the web, tablets, and smartphones 24 hours a day. Math Nation helps students master math skills with individualized instruction from dynamic content videos led by “Study Experts” — and students can choose the Study Expert who best fits their learning style. Using the Math Nation mobile app, students can also download videos and view them offline later when they may not have internet access. In addition to the videos, Math Nation resources include personalized remediation tools, digital practice tools, homework help and virtual tutoring, a professional learning community and resources for teachers, and family support videos. A limited supply of printed student workbooks are available as well. “Equity — ensuring learning opportunities for all — is a core AMSTI belief,” said AMSTI Director Dr. Sandy Ledwell. “Through this $6 million partnership, Math Nation will provide print and online resources for grades 6-8 Math in the 2022-2023 school year. In the 2023-2024 school year it will add even more resources to support Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Our partnership with Math Nation ensures that every student in those courses can engage in grade-level, standards-aligned practice to build their knowledge, skills, and confidence in math, anytime and anywhere.”

Mr. Josh Weatherly represented Guin Elementary at the University of Alabama’s Blackburn Leadership Symposium. He was asked to help present with Terry Roller (Assistant State Superintendent), Dr. Nalls (from i3 Academy), and Tricia Crain (Al.com). He was invited because GES was identified as a High Flyer School in Tricia Crain’s articles on Al.com. Way to go!
Mrs. Webb’s Second Grade Class at Guin Elementary is ready to “Wave” the Lynn Bears goodbye in their Hawaiian/Beach wear! How cute are they! Good luck to all of our Marion County teams!

Hackleburg Elementary School Principal, Mary Kennedy, wowed the audience during our 2022 Countywide Teacher Inservice. She reminded everyone that many of our students bring much more to school in their “backpacks,” (chains of anxiety, abuse, neglect, hunger, etc.) and we should be mindful of these things as we teach them. Excellent job, Mrs. Kennedy!
Important Reminder:
Hackleburg Elementary School Principal, Mary Kennedy, had a special celebration for her teachers Monday as they celebrate being chosen as an ARI Spotlight of Reading School.
Mrs. Katherine Parham, 6th grade teacher, and Mrs. Ginger Eatman, SNAP-Ed Educator, were selected to attend Ag in the Classroom this summer. Alabama Agriculture in the Classroom is an interdisciplinary educational program that promotes Ag literacy for students in all grade levels K-12. Mrs. Parham and Mrs. Eatman will use this information in working with classes at Brilliant school gardens and science classes, as well as utilizing the greenhouse and outdoor classroom when they are installed.
Thanks to the Alabama Department of Education EL (English Language Learner) Coaches Robin Stutts and Miguelina Quinones-Mason for coming and providing effective EL training. Welcome back to school! We would like to thank all of our law enforcement throughout the county for helping our students arrive safely every day!
Here are a few tips to help you get back into the school routine:
“One Moment in Time”
Thank you to ALL who contributed their time and effort to our 2022-2023 Countywide Inservice. (Shown are just a few).
School will resume for Marion County students tomorrow, August 9th, and motorists will be sharing the road with school buses once again. Please allow additional time in your daily commute to accommodate more traffic, including buses, on the roadways. Our Transportation Department operates with our children’s safety as its number one priority. Please help them keep our children safe by keeping a watchful eye for school buses and being mindful of the law which pertains to them.
Our amazing MCBE reading specialists (Amie Cantrell, Mary Dee Emerson, Angie Jeffreys, Emily Mims, and Rachel Streetman) and AMSTI state math specialist, Gretchen Webb, led our new k-6 teachers on an extensive overview of reading programs and math resources. Maybe we’re partial, but we have the best!!!
**New Teacher Orientation 2022-2023**
Welcome to all of our new teachers!
Just a reminder that all students entering 6th grade are required to have an up-to-date immunization record on file. Sixth grade students will need the TDaP booster. Please call your physician, health department, or pharmacy for assistance.

Even though we stay out of controversial sports rivalries, we found it amazing that Brazil's President Bolsonaro sported the Alabama cap that he was gifted by our very own 4th Grader, Vincent Colburn of Hamilton Elementary School!
