Law Enforcement put their lives on the line every day. They've answered a call that is demanding and often unappreciated. The jobs are often thankless and take them away from their families for long hours. On this day, we have an opportunity to thank them for their service.

January is School Board Recognition Month, and we are so thankful for ours!

***REMINDER***

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed annually to remember and honor the 2,403 Americans who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. This led to the U.S. declaring war on Japan the next day and thus entering World War II.

Eleventh graders from Brilliant, Hackleburg, Hamilton, and Phillips experienced a day of ‘adulting.’ Students learned what not to do/wear in a job interview, learned some automotive basics, experienced the process of filling out medical forms in a doctor’s office, learned about CPR/First aid, and got to experience the 4-H Your Money Your Life simulation. Your Money Your Life gives youth an early dose of their financial reality check before they make life and career decisions. This simulation helps young people understand the financial responsibilities they will face as they earn a living in the real world. Participants were given a salary based on the career they chose, paid taxes, and then got to see how far the money they earn monthly can go as they choose housing, transportation, groceries and more. We even had some visitors - Mr. and Mrs. Mayhem - to give students a dose of ‘life’ as they completed the simulation. It was an eye opening experience for the youth and a fun day for the adult volunteers for sure! Thank you to everyone involved for helping ensure this event ran smoothly.

On December 2nd, National Special Education Day commemorates the anniversary of the nation’s first federal special education law. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was signed into law on December 2, 1972. IDEA made education available to all children, and this day honors the progress that has been made in special education.

Phillips High JAG students conducted their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for 2023. Over 600 cans of vegetables were collected and donated to the local Civitan Club. The Civitans distributed the can goods to needy families in the community for Thanksgiving.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Phillips High School JAG students participated in the State-Wide Service Project by collecting 200 pairs of socks to be donated to the Salvation Army to help the homeless population. This project was decided on by the Alabama NCA State Ambassadors who were inspired by "Bombas founders Randy Goldberg and David Heath who learned that socks are the number one most requested item in homeless shelters. As a result, Mr. Goldberg and Mr. Heath decided to create a company that would donate socks to people experiencing homelessness."
