attendance
Phillips High School is happy to recognize Tiana Thrasher, Zach Farr, Alayna York, and Brooklyn Gosa for their perfect attendance during the month of September. Phillips High School and the Marion County Board Education issued incentives to help encourage student attendance during this past month. Brooklyn was the lucky winner of $100 and the other three students received gift cards to local restaurants for their attendance. Overall PHS had 68 students with no checkouts, checkin, tardies, or missed days of school with an attendance rate of 94.3%. Additionally, the Alabama State Department of Education records chronic absenteeism as missing more than 10% of the school year. That equals 18 absences or more than 2 per month regardless of reason, excused or unexcused. Studies show that students who are chronically absent are adversely affected due to missed instruction and opportunities afforded them by being in attendance on a regular basis. Moreover, students are practicing good habits now that will serve them one day in the workforce. As it was once said, “half the battle is won if you get up, dress up, and show up.” At PHS we would like to encourage every student to be at school everyday and have set a goal to try and record a 96% attendance rate for the 2022-2023 school year. We hope to continue to offer incentives and celebrate the success of students who help us meet the high expectations set before us.
